FAQ for Awareness Through Movement® Classes
Why?
We all have something we want to improve in ourselves. Whether it’s to improve that nagging back pain, to walk easier, to work at the computer with more comfort, to improve your swim stroke, to dance better, we all, in essence, want to live more fully. Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement® lessons approach these activities, NOT by showing you technique, but by helping you learn how to feel yourself move, and then how to move more fluidly and efficiently so that you can do the things you want to do.
What's it like?
In an Awareness Through Movement class you will be verbally guided through a series of gentle motions with attention brought to your own movement patterns. In a class you are often lying down, but could also be standing or sitting. A class typically lasts about an hour.
How does it work?
Explorations of these easy, but yet unusual movement patterns allow your nervous system to be aware of differences and to learn kinesthetically how you could move better. It’s much like a baby who is lying on the floor exploring how to raise its head or grab its own foot. We still have that ability to learn quickly, much like a child does, if we bring our attention to the feeling of exploratory movements.
Who can do this?
Anyone! The lessons are easy and don't require any particular strength, experience, or ability. If you think you are too injured, too disabled, too impatient, or too anything, you can still do a Feldenkrais lesson because you will not be imitating an instructor. You will be working within your own limits and comforts, and also going at your own pace.
